Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
