A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
